STRAHAN

DAY 28-31

We arrived in Strahan yesterday and pulled into the Golf Club RV camping ground to use as our base to explore the area. This is a low cost campground at $10 per night, no facilities and is for self contained vehicles. Quite a busy little place by mid afternoon each day so make sure you get in early to mid afternoon!

Our first stop in Strahan was a wander to Hogarth Falls. This falls walk is right in the heart of town and an easy walk starting from People’s Park.

We had some drizzly and windy weather in Strahan and ended up staying for 5 nights to wait for the sunshine so we could head out on the Gordon River Cruise.

We also went along to THE SHIP THAT NEVER WAS! This is a live theatre production and has been performed in Strahan since January 1994. The play tells the dramatic and hilarious true story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island! The play relies heavily on audience participation and is a fabulous and highly funny show – do not miss it!! Tyler played the part of a 95 year old man!!

Once our weather was finally in our favour we booked a day with GORDON RIVER CRUISES. And, what an incredible day it was aboard “Spirit of the Wild”.

This cruise is an informative 6 hour cruise that includes…

  • A trip out through Hells Gates, where Macquarie Harbour meets the Southern Ocean.
  • A stop off at Heritage Landing for a wander through the World Heritage Rainforest.
  • A guided tour of Sarah Island, Australia’s first Convict Settlement.
  • The boat switches to using its electric motors while slowly cruising along the Gordon River for a super quiet, and stunning, ride!

We were so lucky with the weather today, it was fabulous… only sunshine to be seen!

Not far up the road in Zeehan is the Spray Tunnel and it’s worth a visit.

The Zeehan Spray Tunnel is a 100 metre long abandoned railway tunnel that was part of the silver mining operations during the late 1800’s. The tunnel was carved through the hill to enable ore to be removed from the mine.

If you don’t like spiders, don’t shine your torch on the roof or sides of the tunnel!! I (Selina) kept my torch firmly on the ground while the other three happily looked for and at them!!!
