BATTERY ROCK REST AREA – Gungal, NSW

Battery Rock Rest Area is a FREE CAMP on the Golden Highway. The rest area is fairly small however there is a turning circle down the bottom so access in and out if towing is fine.

This rest area has some interesting rock formations that are millions of years old!  Even if you are not camping overnight, it’s worth a quick break to view these.

WHERE IS IT?

Battery Rock Rest Area is between Sandy Hollow and Merriwa on the Golden Highway, around 3km west of the township of Gungal.

ROCK FORMATIONS

An interesting example of Columnar Jointing, over 30 million years old. Formed after a volcanic eruption, the jointing is apparently caused by shrinkage as the lava slowly cools.
